The second-largest Dodecanese Island, Karpathos is known for its charming contrasts.
It is an island with green mountains and golden beaches, traditional villages filled with color and customs and lively bars and cafes.
It is an island in which customs and traditions are kept unchanged, and this is easily perceived by local events and festivals, in which almost all residents participate.
Karpathos has 160km coastline with numerous beaches in different beauty and style each.
Then again, with so many beaches there’s plenty of competition on Karpathos.
There is Ahata beach, with blue-green water and fine pebbles, and the much-photographed Kyra Panagia (more sandy and organised and with plenty of tavernas) right next to Ahata.
Further north, there is the quiet beach Agios Minas and, to the south, Ammoopi (fully organised and ideal for families).
Agios Nikolaos, in Arkasa, is sandy and shallow and great for a sunset view of Kasos Island or a walk up to Paleokastro.
Further distant are Diakoftis, Araki, Mihaliou Kipos and the popular sandy beaches of Lefkos bay.
Finally, for those who love water sports Makris Gialos and Agrilaopotamos are great choices.
Karpathos has many places of rare and wild beauty, settlements of impressive architecture and lively tradition as long as plenty of ruins from all the periods of its long history.
